Abstract

The global food and energy systems are at a crossroads. As humanity faces the dual crises of climate change and resource depletion, the bioeconomy—an economic system based on renewable biological resources—offers a promising alternative to fossil-fuel dependency. This review explores how innovations in biotechnology, circular agriculture, and climate policy can converge to accelerate the transition toward a sustainable and resilient bioeconomy. It examines the scientific and economic underpinnings of bio-based industries, the role of agricultural residues and microbial processes in circular nutrient flows, and the policy frameworks enabling green innovation. The article highlights successful bioeconomy models from Europe, Asia, and Latin America and identifies barriers related to governance, equity, and technology transfer. Ultimately, the bioeconomy transition represents not just an economic shift but a systemic redesign of human interaction with natural capital.
