The global transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems is one of the most profound transformations in modern
history. Driven by the urgency of climate change, energy insecurity, and environmental degradation, nations are pursuing
ambitious decarbonization strategies to achieve net-zero emissions. This review explores the role of environmental foresight—
a systematic, anticipatory approach to sustainability planning—in shaping effective renewable energy transitions. It highlights
how foresight methods, including scenario analysis, system dynamics modeling, and horizon scanning, inform energy policy,
technological innovation, and socio-economic adaptation. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and digital
twins has further enhanced the predictive power of foresight in managing complex energy systems. Moreover, this paper
examines the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of renewable transitions, emphasizing the importance of just
and inclusive frameworks that ensure equitable energy access. Case studies from leading renewable economies demonstrate
that combining foresight with policy innovation can accelerate the shift toward low-carbon development. Ultimately, the review
concludes that foresight-based energy governance is essential for achieving a sustainable, resilient, and carbon-neutral global
future.
