Abstract

The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and cybercrime has redefined the landscape of digital threats. While AI serves
as a cornerstone in modern cybersecurity defense systems, it is also increasingly exploited by cybercriminals to automate
attacks, evade detection, and orchestrate large-scale data breaches. AI-driven cyberattacks—ranging from deepfake-based
fraud and automated phishing to adversarial machine learning—pose unprecedented challenges to global digital security. This
review provides a comprehensive examination of how AI is being weaponized in cybercrime, the technologies enabling such
activities, and the vulnerabilities exploited. It further explores contemporary counterstrategies, including adversarial resilience,
explainable AI (XAI), and collaborative threat intelligence systems. The paper concludes with policy and ethical
recommendations for mitigating AI-enabled cyber threats through responsible innovation and international cooperation.
